Next Young Tradition concert
From Cdssyouth
The next Young Tradition concert is on May 17th, at the Waterfront Park in downtown Burlington (Vermont). This will be the 4th year we're doing a concert like this, featuring 25-and-under musicians, singers and dancers in folk and traditional styles. The concert is presented by the Events for Tom Series and Burlington Parks and Recreation, and runs during the day time hours, approximately 10:30am to 3pm. We're working on the possibility of adding an early evening reception/party/session somewhere in the downtown area. Last year we had over 50 singers, musicians and dancers, with music and dance styles covering Appalachian, Bluegrass, Bosnian, Cape Breton, Celtic, Folk, Irish, Old Time, Quebecois, Sacred Harp, Scottish, and Singer/Songwriter. Instruments played included accordions, banjos, guitars, fiddles, mandolins, percussion and Scottish pipes.
Proceeds from the concert, beyond basic expenses, benefit the Tom Sustic Fund, which supports families with children being treated for cancer. The concert will continue to function as a showcase for other promoters, and we intend to produce another video for public access TV in the Burlington area, which can be purchased at cost by participants. There's no pay for performers, but 'audience favorites' are offered performances at Champlain Valley Folk Festival, First Night! Burlington, Higher Ground, the Instant Coffeehouse (on 'You Tube'), the Middlebury Festival on the Green, and the Quechee Balloon Festival. Other prizes have included recording studio time, time with a professional photographer, etc. Several festivals and organizations have proposed hosting or sponsoring Young Tradition showcase tours throughout the US and Europe, which would consist of performers who appear at the annual Young Tradition concert in Burlington. We usually do a feature concert somewhere in Burlington with the performer/performers with the highest number of votes sometime in the 12 months following the May concert. This year we featured the Alash Ensemble in a concert in Burlington, the top vote getters in 2007.
Additional support for the concert has been provided by the Burlington Violin Shop/Vermont Violins, the Fiddleheads, the Burlington Free Press, WOKO, the Young Writer’s Project and others. A donation of $2 is requested at the gate for those who attend the concert, which includes admission to the Kids Day events that are happening on the Waterfront on the same day.
